Does this sound like you?

  • I am missing one tooth, or a few.
  • I have a tooth that needs to come out.
  • My denture slips, rubs or makes it hard to eat.
  • I hide my smile in photos.
  • I chew on one side because of missing teeth.
  • I was told I do not have enough bone for implants.

If you said yes to any of these, a dental implant may help. Let’s talk about it.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small post placed in your jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. A new tooth is then attached to the implant, giving you a replacement that looks and functions much like a natural tooth.

Over a few months, your bone grows around the post and holds it tight. Because it is held by your bone, an implant does not slip like a denture. It also does not need the teeth next to it for support.

Dental implants can improve your ability to chew, restore confidence in your smile, and help preserve jawbone where the implants are placed.

Ways implants can replace teeth

It depends on how many teeth you are missing. We look at your mouth and your goals, then explain your choices.

One tooth

Single implant

One post and one new tooth. The teeth next to it are not touched.

A few teeth

Implant bridge

A few implants can hold a row of new teeth. You do not need one post for every tooth.

All your teeth

Snap-in implant denture

A denture that snaps onto implants, so it stays put. You can take it out to clean it.

All your teeth

Fixed full set on implants

A full set of new teeth held in place by implants. They stay in, and only the dentist takes them out.

Smaller post

Mini implants

Thinner posts that can work in some smaller spaces, or to help hold a denture.

What happens, step by step

1

Your first visit

We discuss your goals, examine your mouth, and explain your treatment options. When needed, we use advanced 3D imaging to evaluate your jawbone and plan your treatment. We’ll also explain any costs before proceeding.

2

Getting your mouth ready

Some people need a tooth taken out or bone built up first. Dr. Shakfa does this here too. Not everyone needs this step.

3

Placing the implant

Dr. Shakfa places the implant after numbing the area. If you’re anxious about treatment, we offer sedation options, including IV sedation administered by Dr. Shakfa, when appropriate.

4

Healing

Healing typically takes 3–6 months, although this varies by patient. When needed, we can usually provide temporary teeth so you don’t have to go without teeth while your implants heal.

5

Your new tooth

Dr. Barbat typically makes your new tooth to match your smile and attaches it to the implant. She checks your bite so it feels right.

Been told you don’t have enough bone for dental implants?

You may still have options. Dr. Shakfa performs bone grafting and sinus lifts right here in our office, which can make implants possible for patients who might not otherwise qualify.

Nervous about the dentist?

You are not alone. If you’re anxious about treatment, we offer sedation options, including IV sedation administered by Dr. Shakfa, when appropriate. The right choice depends on your health and the treatment you need.

Questions people ask

Does getting an implant hurt?
We numb the area to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Sedation options are also available if you’re anxious. Some soreness or swelling afterward is normal and can usually be managed with medication and simple home care.
How long do implants last?
With good care at home and regular checkups, implants can last for many years. They need brushing, flossing and cleanings, just like your own teeth.
Am I too old for implants?
Age alone is usually not the problem. Your health and your bone matter more. We will tell you honestly if implants are a good fit for you.
What if I do not have enough bone?
You may still have options. Dr. Shakfa can often build up bone first, right here in our office. We will know more after we examine you and, when needed, take 3D images.
How long does the whole process take?
It depends on your mouth. Most of the time goes to healing, which typically takes 3–6 months. Once we’ve evaluated your mouth and discussed your treatment plan, we’ll explain the expected timeline.
How much do implants cost?

Your initial implant consultation is complimentary. If diagnostic records, imaging, or other services are needed, we will review any associated fees with you before proceeding.

Your treatment cost depends on how many teeth you are replacing and what your mouth needs first. We accept CareCredit and Happen Bank (formerly LendingClub). These companies offer health care financing, and they decide who qualifies.

Does insurance help pay for implants?

Some dental insurance plans cover part of the cost of implants, but coverage is often limited and depends on your specific policy. Our team can help you review your benefits and understand what costs you may be responsible for.
